"That is one wish which cannot be granted." — Byakko

Byakko (白虎) is one of the four beast gods and is known as the "White Tiger of the West." His shrine is located in the country named Sairou (Xi-Lang), which is the western kingdom.

In mythology, the white tiger is associated with autumn, metal, the wind, and is the god of righteousness. He is also viewed as the king of animals. He displaced the kirin/qilin as the god of the west.

Appearance[]

Byakko

Byakko's animal form.

In his animal form, Byakko appears as a white tiger with yellow eyes. In his human form, Byakko is a handsome young man who retains his golden eyes and has silver hair pulled back in a ponytail. He wears silver armor, which also has a white tiger pattern on it. As the other three gods do, he has a symbol on his forehead.

Priestess[]

Suzuno Osugi was the Priestess of Byakko, having been sixty years before Miaka became a Priestess of Suzaku.

She is known to have been in love with the celestial warrior Tatara. Once she had summoned Byakko, she asked if they could stay together; but, Byakko denied them this since the Priestess' mission finishes automatically after the summoning, and the two were torn apart. However, even though they were in different worlds, both of them died at exactly the same time.

The proper story of Suzuno will be developed throughout the Fushigi Yuugi: Byakko Senki manga. Which also features a usurper to the Priestess of Byakko seat: a bitter, sad and angry sorceress/fighter named Neiran, the protagonist of the prequel Fushigi Yuugi: Byakko Ibun.

The Wishes[]

Currently, the only wishes of Suzuno Osugi that has been shown in the series is her wish to be with Tatara --which is a wish that cannot be granted.

Warriors[]

The Seven mansions of Byakko are known in the anime as the Seven Warriors of Byakko. Subaru, Tatara, and Tokaki are the only three warriors shown in Fushigi Yuugi anime.

Below is the full list of Byakko's warriors:

  • Amefuri - (Net)

  • Koki - (Stomach)
  • Subaru - (Hairy Head)
  • Tatara - (Bond)
