"I was studying for the Kakyo exams, then the stars appeared to me disturbingly on a vision. I thought that if I was too late, the Suzaku Seven would die."
—Chiriko

Chiriko (張宿), real name Doukon Ou (王 道煇 Ō Dōkon), is the youngest member of the Suzaku Seven and the last to make his appearance with the mark of Suzaku placed upon his foot. He has the gift of extreme intelligence and is preparing to take the notoriously difficult Imperial Examinations, known as the Kakyo exams, in an effort to become a government official in Eiyou.

Personality[]

Chiriko is the youngest of the warriors but his intelligence far exceeds that of a child's. With an ambition to become a government official, he studies relentlessly to pass the Kakyo exams in his hometown of Jouzen, a city known for its scholars. Underneath his polite and quiet exterior lies a drive to become a "man of strength." Chiriko also admires his fellow warriors for their courage, especially Tasuki, who takes him under his wing as a brother-figure, while Mitsukake takes on the role of his father-figure.

Even with his celestial power of extreme intelligence, his young age and inexperience do not provide him with enough control over when his powers are activated. He tends to look down on himself when he cannot make his character appear like the rest of the warriors, which renders him a child of only "average intelligence." Nonetheless, he constantly proves his strength through helpful tactics and insight.

Story[]

Yuuai Den[]

In Chiriko's light novel, Yuuai Den, it is revealed why he was so late to joining the Suzaku Seven in the original series.

Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play[]

Chiriko's Mark

Chiriko's Celestial Mark.

Chiriko appears late in the series, making his debut in Chapter 36/Episode 23 after heroically saving Miaka and the rest of the Celestial Warriors from Amiboshi's assassination attempt. After they fail to summon Suzaku, Amiboshi reveals his identity as a Seiryuu Warrior and traps the group with his flute magic, aiming to kill them with an ear-piercing attack. By blowing on a leaf, Chiriko produces a high-pitched buzzing which interrupts the flute playing. His quick-thinking buys time for Tamahome to disarm the undercover Seiryuu Warrior before chasing him, along with Tasuki, towards a central canal. Cornered, Amiboshi dives into the rushing water and is presumed dead. Chiriko then introduces himself as a Celestial Warrior of Suzaku, apologizing for the delay.

For the remainder of the series, Chiriko tags along with the rest of the group during their adventures. He is not heavily featured again until Chapter 43, where a storm conjured by Soi leads them stranded on Nyosei Island.

Death[]

Chiriko death

After the Seiryuu warrior, Miboshi summons the powerful beast and takes over Chiriko's body, forcing him to pursue the Suzaku warriors, Chiriko and Miboshi's death awaits.

But Chiriko strikes his body, controlled by Miboshi using the Tibetan Prayer wheel and its ends. Though Miboshi dies because of this, Mitsukake offers to heal Chiriko's wounded body. But Chiriko disagrees because healing his body causes Miboshi to heal again, (who is inside his body). So Chiriko and Miboshi's lives end here.

Later in the 2nd OVA, Chiriko is resurrected.

Vocal Collection[]

"When the priestess encounters Suzaku's power, any kind of wish can be granted. This is the legend of the kingdom of Konan, a legend from long, long ago."
—Chiriko in Akai Iitsutae

Both Kawakami Tomoko and Orikasa Ai lent their voices to Chiriko's Vocal Collection, a compilation of songs sung by the child prodigy for the Fushigi Yuugi Soundtrack in both the anime and drama CD.

Trivia[]

  • Chiriko is the second of the male Seishi to be voiced by a female voice artist.
  • Chiriko's real family name, Ou, means "King."
  • For Valentine's Day in 1996, fans of the manga sent gifts to their favorite characters. Chiriko received 32 items, coming in fifth overall.
