The Manual of Style for the Fushigi Yuugi Wiki is a guideline for users on article writing.
For more information, please contact one of our Administrators.

Canon

Here at the FY Wiki, we follow a canon policy when writing articles. "Canon" refers to material officially written by Yuu Watase or an ascribed author. To ensure that our articles align with this policy, we cite our sources (see References).

Apart from the "Trivia" section (see Headings), all content in an article must be canon. Fan theories, head-canons, and other commentary can be expressed on your profile page, in article comment sections, and in the "Discuss" tab.

Canon Material

While some writers and fans may want to only write about Yuu Watase's work, the FY properties below are treated like canon when writing character, location, item, and term articles (see Article Types).

Non-Canon Material

You can write about the FY properties that are not considered canon. However, they must not be included when discussing the official timeline/events of FY.

General Style

All articles must be written in present-tense, regardless whether a character is deceased.

"Tamahome is a Celestial Warrior of Suzaku." ✔
"Tamahome was a Celestial Warrior of Suzaku." ✖

Please refrain from using Romaji in articles. Instead, use the English translation/terms. Romaji may be used in the translation section of an article's introduction (see Introductions).

"Warriors," "Priestess," "Mt. Reikaku" ✔
"Seishi," "Miko," "Reikaku-zan" ✖

Only link to a page upon your first use of its name in an article.

"Hotohori first appears in the Konan palace...Hotohori is secretly the Emperor of Konan." ✔
"Hotohori first appears in the Konan palace...Hotohori is secretly the Emperor of Konan." ✖

All titles of manga, anime, video games, light novels, albums, and drama CDs must be italicized.

"Takiko Okuda is the main character of Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden." ✔
"Takiko Okuda is the main character of Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden." ✖

Creating Articles

Before creating an article/page, check to make sure a page on the content does not already exist.

Infoboxes

Every article should begin with an Infobox, which provides an overview of a character/location/item.

To insert an Infobox in the Visual Editor:

  1. Click "INSERT" on the top navigation bar and select "Infobox."
  2. Scroll to find your subject-specific Infobox (ex. "Infobox Supporting Character"), select it.
  3. Fill out the parameters, including images (if applicable).

Make sure to link all the terms with pages in the Infobox, regardless of whether they appear in the article text.

Introductions

After completing your Infobox, you will need to write a short Introduction.

  1. The first line of your article should start with the Title in bold.
  2. The title should be followed by parenthesis containing (the title's Kanji term, the Romaji translation in italics, the Pinyin translation in italics, and the "direct/rough English translation" in quotes).
  3. After the parenthesis, add the role the subject plays in FY.
  4. Next, add the titles of the media the article appears in/is part of in italics.
  5. Finally, provide a brief description of the article's subject. This section should be 3-4 sentences max!
Example:
Konan (紅南国 Kounan Koku, Hóng Nánguó, "red south country") is one of the four countries in The Universe of the Four Gods in Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play, Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden, the light novels, and OVAs. It is protected by Suzaku and ruled by Emperor Hotohori.

Headings

Each article type has a specific layout. Headings help organize article content and increase readability. Determine your article type below and follow its layout for Headings and Sub-Headings (see Article Types).

To create a Heading in the Visual Editor:

  1. Click on "Paragraph" in the top navigation bar.
  2. Select "Heading" (Ctrl+2) and hit "enter" to begin typing.
  3. To create a Sub-Heading, follow the same steps and select "Sub-heading 1" (Ctrl+3) or another variation.

Only add Sub-Headings if applicable. For example, if there is no information on a location or item's history, do not include a Sub-Heading labeled "History."

A relevant Character Quote is encouraged to be placed directly underneath section Headings, but is not necessary. To add a Quote in the Visual Editor:

  1. Select "INSERT" in the top navigation bar and select "Template."
  2. Search for "Q"
  3. Fill out the parameters and add it to your article.

If you are using the Source Editor: type {{Q}}.

References

References tell your reader where you found your information. When writing articles, try to cite as much as possible! Manga chapters, anime episodes, magazines, and even CD track numbers are all relevant sources to cite.

To add a Reference:

  1. Search for the chapter/episode/magazine/CD track to confirm your claim/sentence as canon. When you find your source, place your text cursor after the period of your claim.
  2. Click the book icon in the top navigation bar.
  3. If this is your first time citing this specific source in your article, select "Basic" (Ctrl+Shift+K). To reuse a source, select "Re-use."
  4. Enter your reference in the textbox and select "INSERT."
  5. Next, enter the Source Editor.
  6. Place your text cursor underneath your "References" heading and type: <references />
Example:
"Nakago wants to be immortal, all-powerful, and god-like.[1]"

If your reference list has more than seven entries, in the same spot, insert the Reflist template by typing: {{Reflist}}. You can also add this template in the Visual Editor:

  1. Select "INSERT" in the top navigation bar and select "Template."
  2. Search for "Reflist" and add it to your article.

Navigation

To guide users to related articles, we use navboxes. They are located underneath the very last Heading ("Navigation") of every article. To decide which Navigational Template to insert, determine your Article Type (see Article Types).

For example, if you are writing about a Location, go to the Source Editor. Place your text cursor underneath your "Navigation" heading and type: {{Locations}}.

To add a navbox in the Visual Editor:

  1. Select "INSERT" in the top navigation bar and select "Template."
  2. Search for your navbox name and add it to your article.

Categories

Categories help us organize the wiki. Placing an article in a specific category makes it easier for users to find related content. Some categories are general, such as "Characters," "Locations," or "Terms." Others are more specific like "Genbu Kaiden Characters," "Celestial Warriors of Suzaku," or "Royalty." If you feel a category is missing, simply add one to a page.

Please refrain from adding unrelated categories to pages.

Example:
Although Tamahome appears in the manga of Fushigi Yuugi, do not add his character page to the "Manga" category, as it is reserved for only manga titles.

To add categories outside the editor:

  1. Scroll to the very bottom of your page and select the drop-down "Categories" label. There, you will find the categories your article currently belongs to.
  2. Click "ADD CATEGORY" and begin typing a category name.
  3. Hit "SAVE" when you're finished.

To delete a category from a page in the Source Editor:

  1. Enter the Source Editor and find the Category section at the bottom of the page.
  2. Delete your targeted category.

To delete a category in the Visual Editor:

  1. Select the gear icon (settings) in the upper right-hand corner.
  2. Click on "Categories." From there, you can add/delete categories.

If a category already exists on the wiki, it will appear below your text as you type. Existing categories will appear blue , categories without pages will appear red.

Images and Galleries

Images

When uploading images, be sure they are high quality and from official sources (manga, anime, light novels, video games, etc.).

An image's name should include the name of its subject matter (i.e. "Eiyou.jpg" or "nurikofighting.jpg"). Captions should be brief and plainly descriptive.

In articles, images must alternate from aligning left to right. You may insert as much official and relevant images as possible, added with caption for explanation, but try not to go overboard. An image every five lines does more damage than good.

Galleries

A section in the articles include galleries with original pictures from the manga/anime/color spreads/video games. Fan Pictures and fanart are to be put in their respective image galleries, and on the gallery section, simply add {{Gallery|ARTICLEPAGENAME}} <nowiki> in the bottom of the section.
