Genbu (玄武), the black tortoise of the north, is the beast god that guards over the Hokkan empire. Genbu is the first god summoned, over 200 years ago by their priestess, Takiko Okuda.
He is associated with Winter, the cold, the earth, long life; and, he is the god of faith. He corresponds with the Black Warrior, particularly in Chinese Mythology.
Like the other Four Gods, the Black Tortoise corresponds to seven "mansions", or positions, of the moon.
Character[]
In animal form, he is a green/brown tortoise with a snake coiling around his body. In human form he's a handsome middle-aged man who has narrow eyes, long, black hair and a thin mustache; he wears dark armor with a brown snake coiling over his shoulders, its head resting on a shield that looks like a tortoise shell.
Story[]
Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden[]
In Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden, Genbu appears once more towards the end when Takiko Okuda manages to summon him. He speaks to her kindly and allows her to make her wishes, but since she's already very weakened from her illness because of her tuberculosis and being devoured by him, she manages to make only two before dying. Genbu fulfills them and the land of Hokkan is saved from a glacial age, with Emperor Rimudo (Uruki) managing to make it flourish even further.

He appears in the 1st OVA when Yui becomes his Priestess and summons him. He again appears briefly in the 2nd OVA. He is only shown in beast form and his voice is never heard.

Trivia[]
- Unlike the other Priestesses, The Priestess of Genbu is the only priestess to only have her two wishes granted before she was stabbed by her father to alleviate her pain. It's implied, however, that the people of Hokkan prayed so fervently to Genbu for Takiko's happiness, that the third wish manifested itself later via having Takiko and her lover/Celestial Warrior Uruki reunited. It is not certain whether they were reunited in Heaven or both reincarnated, like a few of the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku in the third OVA, but it is certain that they were reunited after so many years.
