Genbu Grotto is a major Real World location in Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden and minor one in Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play. It is based on one of the basalt caves of Genbudo Park in Japan.

Genbu Kaiden

Fushigi Yuugi

While researching the Universe of the Four Gods in the National Library, Keisuke Yuki and Kajiwara Tetsuya discover a newspaper detailing the suspected murder-suicide of Einosuke and Takiko Okuda. They travel to the grotto, the scene of the crime, and speak with Suzuno Osugi. Local legend asserts that the cave was the exact spot Genbu first emerged from thousands of years before.

Trivia

  • Genbu Grotto was only featured in the Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play anime, not the manga. Keisuke and Kajiwara's investigation was also added to the anime to further flesh out their characters and the book's impact on the real world.
  • In reality, Morioka and Genbudo Park are around 1,000 kilometers apart. In Genbu Kaiden, Einosuke only has to make a short trip to what can be assumed to be Mount Iwate to reach the cave.
