Fushigi Yuugi Wiki

The Jewels of Memory are both physical and metaphysical objects; simultaneously existing as a solid gemstone and a spiritual manifestation of one's memories. It is also implied that the subject's chi/qi is sealed inside the jewels. They are featured in the Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play manga, the Fushigi Yuugi: 30th Anniversary Special, and OVA 2.

Background[]

In order for a character in The Universe of the Four Gods to be reincarnated into the Real World, their memories inside the book and the root of their other-worldly powers (chi/qi) must be sealed away and stored inside the jewels. Only Taiitsukun has the power to create them, but demons like Tenkou can steal or destroy them.

Once these jewels are separated from the subject, they appear near their loved ones inside precious inanimate objects and even people. This ensures that the memories are protected from harm, but there is the caveat that dangerous demons may attack to steal them for their own use.

For the subject to permanently exist in the world of their choosing, they must retrieve the jewels after a period of eight months or cease to exist in either world. Upon collection, the jewels are absorbed into the subject and their memories and missing chi/qi are restored.

Story[]

Fushigi Yuugi: 30th Anniversary Special[]

In the 2022 one-shot, the process of Tamahome's reincarnation is revealed.

By the one-shot's conclusion, Tamahaome is finally able to reincarnate as Taka and reunite with Miaka in her world. Meanwhile, Tenkou hatches a new plan involving the scattered jewels.

OVA 2[]

In the second OVA, Taka and Miaka are abruptly transported inside the book. They learn from Taiitsukun that they must retrieve Taka's jewels of memory in order to continue to exist in the Real World. The sage reveals that all of the jewels are tied to each Suzaku Warrior and will return the memories Taka made as Tamahome. His journey takes him across Konan to meet the reincarnations of his fellow warriors and collect their corresponding jewels. However, the threat of Tenkou and his demon gods are ever present.
