The Kou Family owns a small farmstead in Taito west of Konan’s Eastern capital, Souun, at the foot of Mt. Reikaku. Tasuki is their youngest, and hid other family members are introduced in Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play and the one-shot, The Reason I Started Hating Women.

The matriarch of the Kou family is a friendly, large-bosomed woman who lacks a filter and regard for personal space. She often chastises her son, Shun'u, for using a weapon in place of brute strength and forbids the use of his Tessen at the dinner table.

The head of the Kou family is depicted as a passive, quiet, and aloof man subject to misunderstandings and being easily forgotten in a crowded room. Once a strong, able man, the stress of being surrounded by six women weakened him into a spineless state, according to Shun'u.
