Fushigi Yuugi Wiki

Mt. Kaou is a mountain to the east of Konan's Eastern capital, Souun. It is ruled by a group of thieves and outlaws called the Mt. Kaou bandits. It is featured in the light novels Genrou Den and Sanbou Den.

Background[]

Leadership[]

The Mt. Kaou bandits have only one known leader. Kieron, a young man with sadistic leanings, leads the Kaou bandits with an iron-fist. Prone to violent outbursts, Kieron's short temper lands captured enemies and fellow-bandits alike into long torture sessions personally conducted by the Kaou leader himself.

The golden walls and décor of the torture chamber in the Mt. Kaou stronghold are not only in stark contrast to the horrors inside, but a display of Kieron's materialism and greed. Instead of equally allocating the bandits' spoilers between the men, all gold is to be brought to Kieron by threat of a grueling session in the golden chamber.

Rivalries[]

The Mt. Kaou bandits' long-term rivals are the Mt. Reikaku bandits. Although their feud cannot be traced back to a specific event, the Kaou bandits wish to secure possession of the fire-spewing fan, the Tessen. Historically only wielded by Reikaku leaders, the Tessen promises overwhelming power to its holder, which the Kaou bandits hope to use to assert their claim over Souun and the surrounding areas.

Power and Influence[]

Similar to the Mt. Reikaku bandits, the Kaou bandits impose a fare on travelers from the East hoping to make passage into Souun and areas beyond, although the bandits are typically more sporadic when collecting tolls. Since Mt. Kaou is situated East of Souun and their rivals on Mt. Reikaku lie in the West, the Eastern capital is often a battleground for the two bandit groups.
