Nuriko's Vocal Collection of his character songs and themes on the Fushigi Yuugi Soundtrack are listed below.
Commentary[]
Nuriko's Japanese voice actor, Chika Sakamoto, performed all but one of his songs. She lent her voice to "Perfect World", "Otome Ranman", and, most famously, "Kaze no Uta," Nuriko's main theme song.
On the Drama CDs, before the production of the anime, Takayama Minami played the titular warrior. Her song "Renren Bojō" was released in the 7th CD.
When the time came to put together Nuriko's death scene in the anime (episode 33), Sakamoto was asked to sing in honor of the beloved character. "Kaze no Uta" was chosen to feature as the ending theme instead of Konno Yukari's "Tokimeki no Doukasen," paying homage to Nuriko's passing.
Yukari would not miss out on singing a song for this character, though. She would end up singing the energetic "Winner" which played in the background of Nuriko's final battle. While it is considered an insert song, after being featured in episode 33, it was largely reminiscent of Nuriko, which made every appearance of "Winner" thereafter echo the fighting spirit of his character, as if a piece of him continued living long after his death.
Nuriko's songs all celebrate a key aspect of his character. In "Kaze no Uta," the acceptance of his death, love, and hope for what he might find in the unknown loom over the lyrics. "Otome Ranman" expresses his more mischievous and care-free side, its lyrics riddled with colorful imagery, expressions of self-love, and a determination to seize the object of his affection. Acting as a final message to his friends, "Perfect World" is a beautiful ballad that equates love and perseverance with strength, while "Winner" pays tribute to his fighting spirit and confidence. "Renren Bojō" showcases Nuriko's vulnerability, encompassing the pain of unexpressed emotions and unrequited love.
