Taka Sukunami (宿南 魏 Sukunami Taka) is the reincarnation of Tamahome in Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play and Eikoden. He makes his animated debut in OVA 1, OVA 2 and OVA 3 and appears in Fushigi Yuugi: 30th Anniversary Special.

Appearance

As the reincarnation of Tamahome, Taka appears identical to him, with the exception of his short black hair and brown eyes. He is also missing Tamahome's celestial mark.

His style is that of a typical Japanese young adult with a casual collegiate look. He rotates button-ups, sweaters, a loose t-shirts throughout the series, occasionally layering a vest, jacket, or blazer overtop. He typically appears in khakis or formal slacks paired with either loafers or sneakers on a more casual day. To commemorate his promise to Miaka, he wears his engagement ring on a silver chain.

While inside The Universe of the Four Gods, Taka opts for similar clothing to Tamahome's. He wears a light purple Chinese robe with violet and yellow trim, an orange sash, and an embroidered vermillion bird on the right breast. Eventually, his celestial mark appears once he regains all of Tamahome's memories.

Personality

Taka is a quiet and reserved person who is usually lost in thought, but is also known for his bravery and loyalty. Taka cares greatly for his friends, and he is willing to sacrifice himself for them.

His life becomes complicated when he begins to remember his past life as a warrior, adapting to modern-day Tokyo while mourning his memories of an ancient world. Taka struggles with conflicting identities, torn between his duty as the reincarnation of Tamahome and his identity as his own person. His fellow Suzaku warriors, particularly Nuriko, help him navigate these internal struggles.

Apart from being a warrior, Taka is also an excellent strategist and often comes up with clever plans to defeat their enemies. Taka's journey is ultimately one of self-discovery and self-acceptance.

Story

Fushigi Yuugi: 30th Anniversary Special

Throughout his entire life, Taka has had mysterious reoccurring dreams about life as a warrior in ancient China.

OVA 1

After Tamahome gave back the ring to Miaka. Yui wished to seal the book away already. Yui told Miaka to drop the ring back to Tamahome before they go back to their own world. Then Tamahome asked for help to Taiitsukun. The only way for him to see Miaka is to reincarnate in the other world using the Jewels of Memory. However, all the memories of him as Tamahome will be taken by the jewels.

Later on, in the end of the OVA 1, a glimpse of Tamahome as a waiter was shown. It was shown that it was fate why they will meet again.

OVA 2

In OVA 2, Taka is enrolled in Seinan University alongside Keisuke and Tetsuya, and is a reluctant member of their Ancient History Research Club. At this time, he has been in a relationship with Miaka for eight months.

Miaka told him all about the book and his past. However, Taka doesn't remember them all. But he believes that he is destined to meet Miaka because it's what his heart says.

In the school, a young boy name Ren controls Miaka's schoolmate and lured Miaka and Taka into trap. When Miaka was thrown down the rooftop, Taka jumps to save her and a red light appeared which made them go back inside the book. Miaka tells Taka that this is where they met. The only way to get Taka's memories is to find the Jewel of Memories or else, Taka will disappear.

Eikoden/OVA 3

Taka/Tamahome was married to Miaka. However, Mayo who has been in love to Taka for a long time entered the book and Miaka fainted and the baby disappeared in Miaka's womb. Keisuke told Taka everything, so Taka went back to the book to save Mayo.

Trivia

• Taka means "high, large" (魏 taka). His surname, Sukunami, means "inn" (宿 suku) and "south" (南 nami).
• The Sukunamis are a family of four, including Taka and his younger sister. The family also owns and operates a dojo.
