Tokyo, Japan, is a major Real World location in Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play. Characters Miaka Yuki, Taka Sukunami, Keisuke Yuki, Yui Hongo, Kajiwara Tetsuya, and Mayo Sakaki live here.

Locations[]

  • National Library: The National Library of Japan that houses The Universe of the Four Gods in Fushigi Yuugi.
  • Yotsubadai High School: Miaka and Yui's high school and a major location in the later chapters and OVAs.
  • Daichu Prep School: A preparatory school Miaka attends to pass her entrance exams.
  • Jonan Academy: The top high school in Tokyo that only admits thirty percent of its applicants. Academically rigorous and competitive, Miaka's mother pushes her daughter to study relentlessly to pass its entrance exam. Miaka eventually earns a spot at the prestigious school but decides to go to Yotsubadai with Yui.
  • Cafe Paradox: A small cafe in Shibuya. This is the meeting spot Keisuke and Tetsuya decide on when Tamahome accidently ends up in their world. Taka Sukunami is also employed here as a waiter until he is subsequently fired after defending Miaka and Yui from pushy Hokuō boys.
  • Hokuō High School: A posh high school briefly referenced in Chapter 78. It is presumably attended by international Scandinavian students who wear designer uniforms.

Tokyo in Fushigi Yuugi

The original manga/anime opens in Tokyo, specifically, in the unnamed middle school Miaka and Yui attend. The backdrop of the city and its smaller locations are featured as throughout the series. Keisuke and Tetsuya are frequently shown wandering about Tokyo researching the Universe of the Four Gods while Miaka and Yui return to the National Library and their homes in the city in between trips inside the book.

The final battle against Nakago takes place in the heart of Tokyo. Much of the city and the surrounding area is damaged in the summoning of both Suzaku and Seiryuu, Tokyo is put in a state of emergency as cars, roads, and buildings are destroyed. However, Miaka fulfills her duty as a priestess and uses one of her three wishes to return the city to normal. In the aftermath of the battle, all memory of the citywide disaster is erased and Tokyo is repaired to its former-state.

OVAs[]

In the later chapters of Fushigi Yuugi and the OVAs, Tokyo is featured more heavily in the story. Specifically, Yotsubadai High School is a prominent location where much of the plot unfolds. Miaka, Yui, and Taka navigate Tokyo together as they discover their stories in the Universe of the Four Gods have not yet come to a close and are closer to home than ever before.
